Environment Agency releases 2010 battery data

May 2012

With a collection rate of 9.45% of waste portable batteries, the UK fell short of the non-statutory collection target of 10% in 2010. A total of 43,446 tonnes of waste portable were placed onto the market in 2010 and 4,429 tonnes were collected.

Provisional data published in March indicates that in 2011, 17.8% of batteries were recycled; just short of the non-statutory target of 18%. In 2012, the first legally binding waste battery collection target set by the EU Batteries Directive comes into effect. Member states are required to collect a 25% of all the portable batteries placed onto the market over the two preceding years. In 2016, this target increases to 45%.
