Defra to Amend Glass Recycling Target

WEEE Design

March 2013

The Packaging Waste Regulations Amendment approved in December 2012 contains an error. An incorrect formula was used for calculating the proportion of a producer’s glass obligations that have to be met by PRNs/PERNs from remelt.

The Regulations wrongly state that 63% of the total obligated glass tonnage should be sent to remelt applications. This is a considerably higher amount than the 2012 Packaging Waste Regulations Amendment proposed. The Regulations intended to set the requirement that 63% of the glass recycling obligation is to be met through remelt rather than through use as aggregate (i.e. 63% of the 81% recycling target).

Defra has published a letter stating that the Packaging Waste Regulations Amendment will be altered to correct the error.p>
