EA predicts decrease in overall PRN demand

June 2013

Environment Agency data published on the National Waste Packaging Database (NWPD) indicates a fall in the overall packaging obligation compared to 2012.

However, numbers suggest that recycling levels for plastics and glass will need to increase this year if the obligations are to be met. This is due to the level of recycling and recovery of plastics and glass required to meet the obligation each quarter was not achieved during the first quarter of the year.

The quantity of packaging waste placed on the market by packaging producers during 2012 determines how much packaging recycling evidence (PRNs) producers are required to buy in 2013. The total annual recycling and recovery obligation has decreased from 6.97 million tonnes in 2012 to 6.75 million tonnes in 2013.
