Number of WEEE Compliance Organisations Decrease in Bulgaria

August 2013

The new Bulgarian Waste Act, adopted in July 2012 has reduced the number of compliance schemes from 15 to five.

A WEEE Compliance Organisation must now meet the following requirements;

  • must be licensed and provide a bank guarantee
  • must provide retailers with WEEE collection boxes without charge
  • must spend no less than 5 per cent of revenues on methods to inform end-users

Compliance schemes in Bulgaria are subject to collection targets. Fines through product fees are issues if the targets are not met.

As part of thinkstep's WEEE Compliance Service, thinkstep can join and maintain membership to compliance schemes for companies in Bulgaria (including schemes for business-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) products) and manage registration requirements and reporting obligations to these schemes on the company's behalf.
