Disadvantages of using a third-party WEEE compliance scheme include:

• Financial costs and producer management time for joining a different WEEE compliance scheme in each Member State
• Ongoing costs and management time for maintaining membership of a different WEEE compliance scheme in each Member State
• Costs to producer of communicating compliance scheme collection arrangements to business end-users in each Member State
• No opportunity for cost savings by passing WEEE collection costs back to end-users
• Lack of flexibility to change
• No opportunity for competitive advantage with resellers
• Lack of marketing opportunities to promote individual producer responsibility
